Family Session
PREPARING FOR YOUR family SESSION
Thank you for this beautiful opportunity! My goal is to capture all aspects of what it feels like to be part of your family.
Lifestyle photography is more honest and real than stiff, overly-posed photos with everyone staring at the camera. And it’s more fun! With my guidance, your family session is an opportunity for you to spend quality time as a family, all while real moments of love and connection are being captured. These moments of connection are what we really want to remember, and these are the moments you’ll have to treasure forever.
Time
The time of your session is based solely on lighting. I love to shoot in the early morning or during the warm glow of golden hour in the evening, usually one or two hours before sunset. The light is just gorgeous! Keep reading for tips to help prepare other children (or yourself!) for these early or later sessions.
Length
Family sessions generally last an hour.
Location
I definitely have a few favorite locations around Ann Arbor. Our area is amazing – there are so many beautiful places within a short drive, each with a unique focus, but still a little bit of everything. Let’s pick a location that fits your style! Check out my blog on Outdoor Photo Locations in Ann Arbor for ideas about different types of locations.
I am happy to choose the location for you, or we can decide together!
Wardrobe
I encourage wearing something that helps you feel comfortable and confident!
If you are interested in a family theme, it’s helpful to think of coordinating outfits rather than matching. This CLOTHING GUIDE will help you painlessly plan your family session outfits in 5 simple steps! If you would like to discuss your wardrobe further, feel free to shoot me an email, I’m happy to help.
Props
I don’t use or bring any props to my sessions.
Preparing Your Children
My goal is to capture your child’s natural self. As a mother of two toddlers, I am totally comfortable with kids that are ready to run and play, in fact, I encourage it! We’ll have fun, play, explore, and they’ll be excited to spend some time with mom and dad.
To prepare kids (or yourself!) for an early morning session, it helps to have things like clothes, shoes, and breakfast prepared the night before. For an evening session, a late nap or some downtime beforehand may help with everyone’s energy levels. Consider bringing jammies and blankets in the car for a comfy ride home!
A good nap always does wonders and full tummies are happy tummies :)
Your life and family doesn’t need to look or feel picture perfect. It’s beautiful the way it is right now, so just be yourselves!

Newborn Session
PREPARING FOR YOUR IN-HOME NEWBORN SESSION
Congratulations on the arrival of your new little one! I am so excited to photograph them.
Your Newborn Portrait Session is 100% custom-built for your family, and your home is the perfect place to timestamp this moment. My style is Fine Art Lifestyle, a beautiful in-between of Traditional and Documentary styles, allowing me to capture all aspects of what this fleeting moment feels like.
Your Home
We will make all arrangements when I arrive at your home. I will walk around and decide the room(s) and location(s) with the best light, usually the living room couch, master bedroom, and/or nursery. I completely understand the nature of this special time - please do not feel you need to clean the whole house! I will help you clean up the area we decide to use for photos.
Your Baby
I believe your newborn is perfect just the way they are, and I allow them to guide our session. I have no expectations or preferences for whether your baby is awake, asleep, fussy, or happy. Newborn sessions can take some time and I’m in no rush - let’s do our best to keep your baby comfortable.
Feedings: I suggest feeding your baby as much as he/she wants about 15 minutes before my arrival. This will help calm them and you. If your baby gets hungry during the session, feel free to feed them. If you’re comfortable, I love to capture nursing/feeding moments.
Clothes: I believe simple is best. I recommend a form-fitting outfit or onesie (usually newborn or preemie sized), with no graphics or words. I will probably also capture a few nude photos. For sibling photos, it’s helpful to have a couple favorite swaddle blankets on hand to wrap your baby.
Posing: I don’t do any major or unnatural posing for your baby. Instead, I gently place them in positions that are comfortable for them at that moment.
Siblings
Having a new baby is a big change for everyone, especially siblings. I understand they are experiencing a lot of new things. You can help them prepare by telling them a friend is coming over to take photos of your family.
Generally, I focus on taking sibling and family shots at the very beginning while they’re still interested. I have no major expectations for their behavior and will never force them to do anything they aren’t comfortable with.
Mom and Dad
Having a baby spans the breadth of human emotions, the highest of highs and the lowest of lows, all on very little sleep. As a mom of two toddlers, I have absolutely been there! My goal during our time together is to help you see just how special and sacred your parenthood and family are. Your life doesn’t need to look or feel picture perfect. It’s beautiful the way it is right now, so just be yourself.
What to Wear
Again, I believe simple is best. Wear something that allows you to feel comfortable and confident. If you are looking for a theme for the whole family, a great way to find balance is by coordinating, rather than matching. Please reach out if you’d like to discuss this more! This CLOTHING GUIDE for families is a great place to get ideas.

Preparing Your Children
While your maternity session has special focus on you, Mom-to-be, the rest of your family will definitely be involved! I’ll spend lots of time on you and your partner, and then we’ll have a fun time capturing your growing family with any other soon-to-be siblings.

Extended family Session
Thank you for inviting me to participate in this special time for you!
Format 1: The One and Done
I know how tough it can be to get everyone in the same place at the same time, so congratulations! Extended family photos are SO important as they celebrate the growth of your family tree, from the roots to the youngest branches.
Your group session will be focused on family groupings (grandparents and grandkids, or all adult siblings, etc.) and each family unit. Choosing lifestyle photography for your extended family session means your photos will also include more honest and real moments in between the money shots. Of course we’re going to get several of everyone looking for above your mantle, but we’re also going to have some fun! With my guidance, your extended family session is an opportunity for you to spend some precious quality time with your whole family. We will focus on capturing your different family groupings, and then we’ll have fun with different aspects of your unique generational relationships! It’s such a great opportunity to photograph grandparents and grandchildren.
The whole session lasts about an hour to an hour and a half.
FORMAT 2: STORIES OF US
We’re going to capture the precious stories of all aspects of your family. We’ll custom build the format together, arranging separate sessions for each family unit as well as a shorter session for the group as a whole. This will allow all members of your family to have a true lifestyle photographic experience both as individuals and as a group! The photographs we will capture will be part of your family’s legacy for generations.
The timeline for your sessions will occur over one day or several, depending on your situation and occasion.

Looking to photograph your extended family at your home? Absolutely! I love photographing places that are meaningful and special to your family.
Wardrobe
Coordinating your outfits (rather than matching) will go a long ways to help your photos feel more cohesive.
Start by picking a color pallet. I really encourage lots of neutral colors, or earth tones. They go with almost anything, and can be intermixed with a small amount of bold colors. Think off- white, cream, gray, taupe, etc.
I encourage wearing something that helps you feel comfortable and confident!
This CLOTHING GUIDE will help you painlessly plan your family session outfits in 5 simple steps! If you would like to discuss your wardrobe further, feel free to shoot me an email, I’m happy to help.
